The Complete Guide to Sourcing Feminine Care from China (OEM/ODM)
A practical buyer's guide to sourcing feminine care products from China: OEM vs ODM, key specs, certifications, factory vetting and an RFQ template.

Introduction
Most buyers come to China for one reason: the supply chain is already here. Non-woven fabric, SAP, release paper and printed packaging are made down the road from the factory, not shipped across an ocean first. That shortens lead times and stops your per-unit cost from swinging every quarter. This guide is the short version of what we tell first-time importers before they sign anything.
Why source feminine care from China
China is still the largest base for disposable hygiene manufacturing, and not because labor is cheap — it isn't, anymore. The real edge is density. When your topsheet, core and wrapper all come from suppliers in the same province, a spec change takes days, not months. For a new brand that flexibility matters more than a half-cent saving per pad.
Know the product types before you brief a factory
| Type | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Disposable menstrual pants | Overnight, postpartum, heavy flow | Leak coverage, pull-up form, SAP 0.8–1.4g |
| Sanitary napkins | Daily use across the cycle | Length 150–420mm, anion option, breathable top |
| Period underwear (disposable) | Light days, backup, travel | Knitted, 10–30ml, discreet |
Most brands launch with one hero category — usually menstrual pants or pads — then extend the line once they know their customers. Don't try to source everything on your first order.
OEM, ODM or private label — which to start with
- OEM — you own the formula and design; the factory builds to spec. Most control, highest setup cost.
- ODM — the factory's existing design, lightly customized (scent, print, size). Faster, lower MOQ.
- Private label — ready product, your logo and packaging. Fastest route to market.
If this is your first brand, start with private label or ODM to test demand. Move to OEM only after volumes justify the tooling. We see too many newcomers burn budget on custom cores they later redesign anyway.
The specs that actually affect quality
| Spec | Why it matters | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| SAP content | Drives absorbency and dryness | Grams per unit, SAP brand |
| Top sheet | Skin feel and breathability | Cotton-feel vs mesh; anion chip? |
| Absorbency (ml) | Claim accuracy | Third-party test report |
| Packaging | Shelf life and branding | FSC paper, individual wrap |
Ask for the SAP brand and grams per unit, not just "high absorbency." And get a third-party test report for the absorbency claim — buyers in the EU and US will ask for it.
Certifications you should require
- ISO 9001 — baseline quality management.
- CE / FDA — market access for EU / US.
- SGS / BV — independent inspection on request.
- FSC — only if you claim sustainable packaging.
Request the actual certificate numbers. A logo on a website is not proof.
How to vet a factory
- Verify business license and export record.
- Ask for a live video walkthrough of the workshop.
- Confirm MOQ, lead time and payment terms in writing.
- Order pre-production samples and test them yourself.
- Agree on an AQL inspection level before shipment.
- Use a clear Incoterm (FOB factory vs CIF port).
Mistakes first-time buyers make
- Chasing the lowest price and ignoring SAP quality.
- Skipping samples to "save time" — it costs more later.
- No agreed QC plan, then disputes at customs.
- Underestimating packaging lead time.
- Forgetting that anion or cooling claims must comply in the target market.
