How to Choose Panty Liners: They're Not Tiny Pads

Panty liners aren't a smaller pad and they won't carry a heavy day. They're for discharge, spotting, and backup. Here's how to pick length, thinness and material without buying the wrong thing.

Introduction

Someone messaged me: "which liner do I use for my period?" The honest answer is none — a liner won't hold a real flow, and using one on a heavy day is how you end up with a mess and a grudge against the brand. Liners do a different job, and once you see that, choosing one gets simple.

What a liner is actually for

A panty liner is a thin, narrow absorbent strip for light needs:

  • Daily discharge. Most people have some — a liner keeps underwear fresh without bulk.
  • Spotting at the start or end of a period, when it's a trickle, not a flow.
  • Backup. Behind a tampon or cup on heavy days, a liner catches the occasional leak so your underwear stays clean.
  • Light bladder leaks. A different product category really, but a liner is the closest many reach for.

It is not a pad. The core is smaller and the cover is thinner, so once flow picks up, it saturates fast.

How to pick one without overthinking

  1. 1Match length to the job. Short liners (≈15 cm) suit daily discharge. Longer ones (≈18–20 cm) suit backup on heavy days or for anyone who moves around a lot. If it's poking out the side of your underwear, it's the wrong length.
  2. 2Thinness is fine — that's the point. A good liner disappears under clothes. Don't equate thin with weak; for light use, thin is correct. Reserve the bulk for actual pads.
  3. 3Material against skin. A soft, breathable topsheet matters more on a liner you wear all day than on a pad you change every few hours. If you get irritation, switch to unscented and a cotton-feel cover.
  4. 4Adhesive that stays. A liner that rides up is useless. Check that the strip holds through a full day of walking; wingless is normal for liners, so the adhesive does the work.
Rule of thumb I give buyers: if you'd describe it as "my period," reach for a pad or period pants. If you'd describe it as "a little something," a liner is right. The two products aren't interchangeable, and the labels on the box won't tell you that.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a panty liner for my period?

Only on the very light edges — spotting at the start or end. A liner's core is small and saturates quickly, so on a real flow it will leak. For actual menstrual flow, use a pad, tampon, cup or period pants; keep the liner as backup behind those.

Are scented liners a good idea for daily use?

Generally no. Fragrance is one of the more common causes of pad-related irritation, and on a product worn all day against sensitive skin, that risk isn't worth it. Unscented, breathable liners are the safer everyday choice.

How often should a liner be changed?

At least once or twice a day for daily discharge, and whenever it feels damp. Because liners are thin, they don't hold much, so on backup days behind a tampon or cup, change them as soon as you notice dampness.
