Introduction

A buyer asked me, dead serious, whether our pads used "real fluff or the chemical stuff." As if a pad picks one. The truth is every modern pad core is both — fluff pulp and super absorbent polymer (SAP) mixed together. The question isn't which one, it's how much of each, and how well they're married. Get that wrong and you get a pad that clumps, gels, or leaks straight through.

Here's what's actually inside, and why the ratio is the real spec.

Fluff pulp: the backbone

Fluff pulp is the processed wood-pulp fibre that gives the core its structure. It wicks fluid outward and holds the shape. On its own it absorbs a fair amount but stays soft and slow — it's the skeleton, not the sponge.

SAP: the sponge

Super absorbent polymer is the granular stuff that locks fluid into a gel. A gram of SAP holds many times its weight in liquid and won't give it back under pressure. That's what stops a pad from feeling wet and what holds the volume. On its own, SAP is just grit — no structure, no wicking.

The magic is the mix, not the SAP. Too much SAP and the core gets stiff, can gel-block (fluid can't reach fresh polymer), and feels odd. Too little and the pad stays thin on capacity. The ratio and the mixing uniformity are what separate a good core from a cheap one.

How the core is built

  1. 1Defibrate the pulp into loose fluff.
  2. 2Blend SAP into the fluff evenly — this step is where cheap cores fail (uneven = lumps and dry spots).
  3. 3Form and compress the core to the pad's shape and target capacity.
  4. 4Wrap and stabilise with the tissue and topsheet so the SAP stays put and doesn't dust out.

Practical rule: when a supplier talks "high SAP" like it's the whole selling point, ask about the blend ratio and the mixing uniformity, not just the SAP percentage. A core is an engineered mix; the number alone tells you almost nothing about how it performs.

Are pads made of fluff pulp or SAP?

Both. A modern pad core is a blend of fluff pulp (structure and wicking) and super absorbent polymer (locks and holds fluid). The performance comes from the ratio and how evenly they're mixed, not from picking one material.

Is SAP safe in sanitary pads?

SAP used in hygiene products is a cross-linked polymer designed to stay locked in the pad and not migrate into the body. It's a standard, regulated component. The relevant checks are the same as the rest of the pad — bioburden, residual monomers, skin safety — not "does it contain SAP."

More SAP means a better pad?

Not on its own. Too much SAP makes the core stiff and can cause gel-blocking, where fluid can't reach fresh polymer and the pad leaks despite high nominal capacity. The blend ratio and mixing uniformity matter more than a high SAP percentage.
