Na Xiaorou: the pack that lives in your bag, not your cupboard.

Na Xiaorou (娜小柔) is Nafei's compact format. Three pieces to a pack, small enough to disappear into a handbag, a desk drawer or a carry-on. The product inside is a thin disposable menstrual pant built on the same material philosophy as the rest of the range, compressed into a pack that assumes it will be carried rather than stored.

  • Double-layer hydrophobic side guards

Why The Small Pack Exists

Most purchases happen away from home.

The feminine care category is designed around a bathroom cupboard. Real usage is not. A pack gets bought at a convenience store on the way to work, carried in a bag for a week, and used in an office or a train rather than at home.

01

Design for the bag

A ten-piece pack is a commitment. It takes up space, it makes noise, and it announces itself when someone opens a bag in a meeting. Three pieces is a pack you can carry without planning for it.

02

Keep the product, shrink the pack

The brief was not to make a cheaper product. It was to make the same product fit a smaller bag. The construction stayed; the count, the film and the fold changed.

Speak the market's language

The stock pack is printed in Chinese, because that is the shelf it was built for. Overseas Chinese retail and Chinese-speaking export markets take the same pack; other markets take it as private label.

The pocket pack is a Chinese retail convention before it is a Nafei idea. In the domestic market, small-count feminine care packs are the norm rather than the exception: three pieces, five pieces, sometimes a single piece sold at a counter. The logic is straightforward. A shopper buys for the next few days, not for the next month, and she buys on the way home rather than in a weekly shop.

What that convention does to product design is easy to miss. A three-piece pack has almost no room for the packaging to do marketing work. There is no back panel for a feature list, no side panel for a certification logo, no space for a QR code that anyone will scan. The front has to carry the brand, the size and the count, and nothing else survives the reduction.

That constraint turned out to be useful. When you cannot explain the product on the pack, the product has to explain itself on first use. Na Xiaorou was built around that test: a wearer who has never seen the brand should be able to open the pack, put the product on and understand it without instructions.

The name follows the same logic. 娜小柔 reads as a soft, gentle given name rather than as a functional product descriptor. It sits on a shelf next to brands that describe what they do; this one describes how it should feel. In a category where the purchase is often made quickly and slightly awkwardly, a name that sounds like a person is easier to say out loud to a shop assistant.

The Format

Three pieces, two sizes, one pack size.

The product line is deliberately narrow. Two sizes cover the hip range that the pack is built for, and the pack itself stays constant so the shelf presence does not fragment.

What the pack has to survive

A carried pack lives a harder life than a stored one. It gets compressed under a laptop, exposed to the inside of a bag for weeks, and opened and resealed repeatedly. The film has to resist pinholes, the seal has to hold after being folded, and the print has to survive friction against keys and a phone.

Na Xiaorou uses a laminated film rather than a single-layer PE bag for this reason. The laminate costs more per bag and is the difference between a pack that still looks presentable after a month in a bag and one that has scuffed white at the corners.

5 + 2g wood pulp and g SAP per piece

The core recipe is identical across both sizes: 5 g wood pulp with 2 g superabsorbent polymer. That is a deliberate choice rather than a simplification. Scaling the core by size is the conventional approach and it produces a product that behaves differently in each size, which complicates both quality control and the buyer's conversation with a retailer about what the product actually does.

Holding the recipe constant means the XL is not a stronger product, it is a larger one. The absorbency is the same; the fit is different. For a buyer, that removes a decision: they stock two sizes for coverage, not two tiers of performance. For a wearer, it removes a surprise: the product behaves the same way regardless of which size she picks up.

The side guards deserve a note because they are the part most likely to be value-engineered out by a competing supplier. Na Xiaorou uses double-layer hydrophobic through-air-bonded nonwoven, which repels liquid back toward the core instead of letting it wick sideways along the leg opening. Removing one of those layers saves a small amount per piece and produces a leak that shows up at the worst possible moment.

Materials & Structure

Thin, but not by cutting corners.

A thin pant is easy to make badly. The version that works is the one where every layer is doing a job, rather than one layer being removed to hit a thickness target.

Topsheet

18 gsm through-air-bonded plain nonwoven. Plain rather than apertured, because an apertured surface feels rougher against skin when the product is worn while moving.

Core

5 g wood pulp with 2 g SAP, identical in both sizes. Pulp distributes, SAP retains. The ratio is tuned for a product that is changed within a normal wear cycle rather than held all day.

Side guards

Double-layer hydrophobic through-air-bonded nonwoven. Two layers rather than one, because a single layer wicks at the fold where the guard meets the core.

Back sheet

PE film forming the outer barrier. Chosen over a breathable film here because the pack is worn for shorter periods and the priority is a reliable liquid barrier in a thin structure.

The waist is the part that decides whether a disposable pant reads as underwear or as a hospital item. Na Xiaorou uses soft nonwoven waist material with elastic strands rather than a wide elastic band. The strand construction distributes tension more evenly across the waist, which matters more on a thin product because there is less material to hide a pressure point.

The PE back sheet is a deliberate departure from the breathable film used on the NAFY pant. On a product worn for a shorter cycle inside clothing, the trade-off shifts: a breathable film adds cost and reduces the margin for error on barrier performance, while the comfort gain over a few hours is smaller. Both choices are defensible; the difference is what the product is being asked to do.

Thickness is the number buyers ask about first and the one that matters least on its own. A pant can be made thinner by compressing the core, which makes it stiff, or by removing pulp, which reduces capacity. Na Xiaorou gets its low profile from the pack fold and the film gauge rather than from the core, which is why the product still feels soft when it is taken out of the bag.

The fold is a design decision that gets almost no attention and drives most of the difference between two packs of the same piece count. A pant folded twice along the length and once across produces a long, flat brick. A pant folded into thirds produces a shorter, thicker block. The first fits a drawer; the second fits a bag pocket. Na Xiaorou uses the shorter fold, which is why the pack reads as compact even though the product inside is a full-size pant rather than a reduced one.

Film gauge works the same way. A thinner film saves cost per bag and reduces the pack profile, and it also reduces the puncture resistance that decides whether a pack survives a bag full of keys. The gauge on this pack was chosen against a simple test: fill a bag with the things a person actually carries, put three packs in it, and carry it for a week. A film that passes that test costs slightly more and produces far fewer returns than one that only passes a laboratory seal check.

Where Na Xiaorou Is Made

The same site, the same lines.

Na Xiaorou runs on the Nafei lines in Shanwei, Guangdong, alongside the other brands in the family. The site has produced feminine hygiene products since 1998, which means the process knowledge behind a thin pant predates most of the brands it competes with.

Running a compact pack on the same equipment as a ten-piece pack is not automatic. The packer has to be reset for a different film width and a different fold, and the seal parameters change with the laminate. That changeover is the reason a three-piece pack carries a higher per-piece packing cost than a ten-piece pack, and it is the reason many factories decline small-count work.

It is also why a buyer should not assume the smallest pack is the cheapest way to test a market. Per piece, the compact format costs more to pack than the ten-piece format, and the gap is real rather than a pricing tactic. What the compact pack buys is shelf fit and carry convenience, which is worth paying for in a convenience channel and usually is not worth paying for in a warehouse club.

Quality & Documents

What a buyer can check before ordering.

Small packs hide defects well. A sealed three-piece bag can look perfect and still contain a product with a failed side seal, which is why inspection on this format concentrates on the pack rather than only on the product.

ISO 9001

Quality management system covering production control, inspection and corrective action.

ISO 14001

Environmental management system for the site, covering waste, effluent and energy.

ISO 45001

Occupational health and safety management across the production floor.

Seal integrity

Seal strength and pinhole checks on the compact pack, where a failure is invisible from the outside.

Export documents

Packing list, commercial invoice and certificate of origin prepared in house per shipment.

Inspection on a compact pack concentrates on three things: seal integrity along the full perimeter, print registration on a small front panel where a millimetre of drift is visible, and piece count. The last one sounds trivial and is the most common complaint in the category, because a three-piece pack is easy to fill with two.

Retention samples are kept per run. On this format they matter more than on a large pack, because the complaint that arrives months later is usually about the film rather than the product: a pack that scuffed, a seal that opened in transit, a print that rubbed off. Having a sample from the same batch settles that conversation quickly.

Certification scope is limited to what applies to this site. If a destination market requires a product-level test report, it is commissioned against that standard rather than borrowed from another product or another market.

Market Versions

One pack, three ways to sell it.

The stock pack is Chinese-language. How it reaches a shelf depends on which of three channels a buyer is working in.

Na Xiaorou Chinese-language retail pack for domestic convenience and supermarket channels
01

Domestic Chinese retail

Convenience stores and supermarket chains. The stock pack is ready to sell as-is, with no artwork work required and no minimum beyond a carton.

Na Xiaorou packs for overseas Chinese retail and Chinese-speaking export markets
02

Overseas Chinese retail

Chinese-language shelves in Southeast Asia, North America and Europe. The same pack works because the shopper is the same shopper, buying in a different city.

03

Private label

Your brand, your language, your pack design. The product specification stays; the film, the print and the copy change to fit the destination market.

The overseas Chinese channel is underrated by buyers who only model national retail. A Chinese-language pack on a shelf in a Chinese supermarket in Toronto or Sydney competes on familiarity rather than on price, and the shopper does not need the front panel translated to make a decision. For a distributor already serving that channel, a pack that requires no artwork work is a fast route to a first order.

Private label works the other way. A buyer in a non-Chinese market takes the same construction and applies local artwork, local language and local regulatory text. The minimum on the bag print is the constraint here, typically around 20,000 bags depending on specification, which is why the first private label order is usually sized to the bag minimum rather than to the piece minimum.

There is a third route that buyers sometimes miss: branded packaging that is compatible with the existing public-design product. That is a lower-commitment option than full private label, useful for a first market test where the buyer wants their name on the pack without commissioning a new design system.

Working With Na Xiaorou

How an order runs.

Six steps. The sequence is built to surface the two things that actually delay a small-pack order: artwork and bag minimums.

1. Brief

Size, pack count, market and whether the stock Chinese pack or a private label pack is required.

2. Sample

Stock samples are free by the pack; the buyer covers shipping. They ship from the retail pack, not a laboratory batch.

3. Artwork

For private label, print-ready files checked against the bag dimensions. A small front panel leaves little room for error.

4. Production

25 to 30 days after approval. The packer is reset for the compact film width and fold before the run starts.

5. Inspection

Seal integrity, print registration and piece count. Piece count is the most common complaint in this format.

6. Shipping

Export documents prepared in house. Carton dimensions and weights provided so freight can be priced accurately.

The starter minimum for private label work is 10,000 pieces per size. Because the pack holds three pieces, that is roughly 3,334 packs per size, which is a smaller commitment than the same piece count on a ten-piece pack. For a buyer testing a market, that arithmetic is the main reason the compact format is attractive.

The bag print carries its own minimum, typically around 20,000 bags. Where the two minimums diverge, the bag minimum governs, and the first order is usually sized to the bag rather than to the piece count. This is worth understanding before a buyer commits to a pack design, because a bag run that exceeds the first order becomes inventory.

Plate fees depend on the number of printed colours. A two-colour front panel on a small bag is a modest cost; a photographic design with a varnish is not. On a pack this size, simpler artwork usually prints better and costs less, which is a rare case where the cheaper option is also the better one.

Questions Buyers Ask

Straight answers before you enquire.

The questions that come up most often on this format, answered the same way we would answer them in a call.

What is Na Xiaorou?
Na Xiaorou is a Nafei own brand of thin disposable menstrual pants sold in compact three-piece packs. The name translates roughly as the gentle one, and the product was built for carrying rather than for storing at home.
Are Na Xiaorou pants washable?
No. They are disposable menstrual pants intended for single use. They are not a reusable cloth period pant and should not be laundered.
What sizes are available?
Two sizes. The M-L retail pack fits a hip circumference of roughly 80 to 105 cm. The XL pack fits roughly 90 to 115 cm. The retail label M-L corresponds to size L on our quotation sheets.
How many pieces are in a pack?
Three pieces per pack, ninety packs per carton, 270 pieces total. The compact pack is designed to fit a bag pocket or a drawer.
What is the absorbent core?
Each piece carries 5 g wood pulp with 2 g superabsorbent polymer in both sizes. The core is wrapped and held by a tissue layer before lamination to the back sheet.
What keeps the sides from leaking?
Double-layer hydrophobic through-air-bonded nonwoven side guards. The hydrophobic treatment repels liquid back toward the core rather than letting it wick sideways.
Is the packaging in Chinese?
The stock retail pack is printed in Chinese. English and other language packs are produced through the private label programme with your own artwork.
Can I get free samples?
Stock samples are free by the pack. The buyer covers the shipping cost. Samples ship from the existing retail pack rather than from a laboratory batch.
What is the private label minimum?
The starter minimum is 10,000 pieces per size. Bag printing carries its own minimum, typically around 20,000 bags, depending on the bag specification.
Where is Na Xiaorou made?
At the Nafei plant in Shanwei, Guangdong, China, the same site that has run feminine hygiene production since 1998.
Is Na Xiaorou suitable for overnight wear?
It can be worn overnight, but the format is optimised for daytime and travel use. Buyers who need a dedicated overnight product usually take the ten-piece pant format instead.
What is the difference between Na Xiaorou and NAFY?
Na Xiaorou is the compact three-piece pack aimed at carrying and travel. NAFY is the ten-piece pack aimed at home use and overnight wear. The constructions are related but the pack economics and the target shelf are different.
