The Truth About Pad 'Allergies': Most Are Not Allergies. They Are Humidity.

2026-08-28

A veteran once told me about a major brand's failure. The company had made diapers for years and decided to enter the sanitary pad market. Sales were flat, so they upgraded the product — or so they thought. They made the topsheet finer and softer. Almost immediately, allergy complaints spiked.

The team could not understand it. "We changed almost nothing," they said. "We only made it softer."

The veteran asked one question: what exactly do you mean by "allergy"?

Here is what experience teaches. True skin allergies are rare. When consumers say "allergy," they usually mean itch or redness. And most of the time, itch and redness are not immune reactions. They are bacterial reactions.

Bacteria need two things to grow: temperature and humidity. A refrigerator keeps food fresh because it lowers both. The human body cannot change its temperature much, but it can change humidity.

The problem was the "upgrade." A finer fiber creates a denser fabric. Imagine a mosquito net: the smaller the holes, the more liquid sits on top. Menstrual fluid is thicker than water. When the topsheet became denser, it trapped moisture against the skin. Humidity rose. Bacteria multiplied. Itch followed.

The surface felt softer, but the humidity went up. Consumers "felt allergic." The brand eventually reverted.

Two lessons. First, softness is a hand-feel metric. Moisture management is a health metric. Second, consumer complaints are not attacks. They are feedback about product design. Users cannot describe the technical detail, but their bodies vote. Your job is not to explain them away. Your job is to listen.

For product developers and buyers

Breathability and moisture management matter as much as absorbency. When selecting a feminine hygiene manufacturer, ask about topsheet structure, core breathability, and humidity retention testing.
