The Inside of a Sanitary Pad: How the Topsheet, Acquisition Layer, and Core Work Together

2026-08-28

Outsiders look at packaging, thickness, and price. Insiders look at the layers — topsheet, acquisition layer, and absorbent core — and how they work together.

An old-timer once told me a story. A client launched a new product with a factory-chosen topsheet and acquisition layer. Lab data looked good. They started shipping. Then the market rejected it.

The veteran cut the product open. The topsheet was fine. The acquisition layer was fine. But the client had swapped in a more expensive acquisition layer because they assumed more expensive meant better. The problem: the new layer wicked fluid faster than the core could absorb it. Fluid pooled on the surface. Leaks followed.

The lesson is not that expensive is better. It is that every layer has a job, and the layers must match.

The topsheet needs to be dry, low-residue, and fast-wicking. The acquisition layer spreads fluid quickly so the core can absorb it evenly. The core absorbs and locks fluid away. If any layer overperforms or underperforms relative to the others, the whole system fails.

Some people think more SAP is always better. It is not. Too much SAP in the wrong place can block fluid movement. The core becomes a barrier instead of a reservoir.

I approach period pants the same way. The question is not which material is the best. The question is what each layer is supposed to do and whether they are in the right positions. A good system does not pile the best parts together. It puts the right part in the right place.

That principle applies far beyond sanitary pads.

For buyers evaluating product specs

Do not judge a pad by its ingredient list alone. Ask how the layers interact. A good feminine hygiene manufacturer should be able to explain the wicking path from topsheet to core.
