A Higher Absorbency Number Doesn't Mean a Better Period Pants

I've sat through too many supplier calls where the buyer leads with one number: "How many ml does it hold?" Like it's the only thing that matters. A few years in this business, and I've come to think the absorbency number is the most over-rated spec on the sheet.
Not because it's fake. Because it answers the wrong question. Nobody's in trouble because their period pants didn't hold enough. They're in trouble because the surface felt wet, or it leaked at the side, or it smelled by hour six. None of those are fixed by a bigger ml number.
The towel test nobody passes
An old engineer I respect used to ask buyers a brutal question. If "more absorbent is better," then a towel would be the perfect top sheet. Pure cotton. Huge capacity. Soft. By that logic it should be the best material we have.
Would you wear one? Against skin, for a whole day?
Of course not. A wet towel held against your skin is exactly how you get heat rash.
That's the whole argument, and it's not mine — it's the point the person was making. A material that holds liquid against the skin is the opposite of what you want. You want a material that lets liquid go through, fast, and then stays out of the way. The top sheet is a funnel mouth, not a sponge.
Soft and absorbent aren't the goal. Dry-and-gone is.
What actually makes it feel dry
People picture a pad like a bucket — bigger bucket, drier you. The real picture is a two-stage thing. The top sheet's job is to move fluid down and stop holding onto it. The core's job is to store it and not give it back.
When a top sheet is too thirsty, it grabs the fluid and keeps it right where you don't want it. Then the fluid creeps back up — what our line calls "rewet." Larger core capacity doesn't help if the top layer is the one refusing to let go.
So a good top sheet is usually the less-obvious choice: a nonwoven that's fluffy and lets liquid pass, not a cotton that hugs it. The fluff matters more than the capacity. I keep saying this and buyers still nod at the ml column.
Three numbers I'd take over "total ml"
- Rewet after load. How much comes back to the surface once it's full? This is the one that decides "dry" vs "damp."
- Penetration time. How fast does it go through the top sheet under a realistic flow? Slow = surface pooling.
- Breathability of the backsheet. A sealed, high-capacity product that traps heat is a warmer, damper product. Period.
None of those print as nicely on a box. That's why the spec sheet leans on the one big number.
Where the big number actually hurts
There's a trap in "500ml super-absorbent" claims. That figure is a single-piece maximum under lab conditions — not what you feel on a Tuesday. Pile too much absorbent chemistry in and you often trade away the things that make it wearable: thinner feel, air flow, less bulk between the legs.
And the lock matters more than the catch. A core that takes fluid in but can't hold it under pressure — sitting, sleeping on a side — pushes it back. We've seen samples that "absorb" beautifully in the demo and then rewet within an hour of real wear. The demo lies.
For most private-label buyers the sweet spot we ship is a mid-range capacity with fast wicking and a backsheet that breathes. The pants that feel invisible to the wearer rarely have the biggest number on the spec.
How we'd have you test it
If you're comparing two factories, stop reading the ml line for a minute. Do the three checks from our OEM sampling guide:
- Pour a realistic amount, wait, then press a tissue on the surface. The one that leaves the tissue cleaner wins — that's rewet, not capacity.
- Look at the spread under the backsheet. Even, wide, pale = fluid went down and stayed. A dark mark right at the top = it's sitting on you.
- Wear one for a full shift before you judge. The spec sheet never felt a thing.

Is a higher ml rating ever the right thing to compare?
For overnight and postpartum styles, yes — those need more reserve, and a low number there is a real red flag. But even then, compare rewet and penetration first. The ml floor matters; the ml ceiling usually doesn't.
Does "ultra-absorbent" mean better for heavy flow?
Not by itself. Heavy flow needs fast intake so fluid doesn't pool at the entry point, plus a core that locks under pressure. A product that's just "more absorbent" but slow to take fluid will still leak at the side. Look at the combination, not the single claim.
Why do brands still advertise big absorbency numbers?
Because it's the one spec that's easy to print and easy to compare on a shelf. It was a real differentiator years ago when basic performance wasn't settled. Most products now clear that bar, so the number stopped telling you much — but the packaging hasn't caught up.
What should I ask a manufacturer instead of "how many ml"?
Ask for the rewet result after a standard load, the penetration time, and batch test reports from recent production runs. If they can show those consistently, the headline ml is almost irrelevant. Our team can walk you through what a real test report should contain.
Can a thin period pants still perform well?
