35 Years of Period Pants in China: From Copying to Setting the Bar

I started in this industry when "Chinese sanitary product" was a punchline in buyer meetings. Importers would ask where the real factory was — meaning Japan or Germany — and treat local plants as the cheap backup. That was the late eighties. I've watched the whole arc since, and the punchline is gone now.
The three eras, honestly
Copying (late 80s–90s). We imported the glue-spray tech and reverse-engineered everything. Nobody was inventing. The job was "make it close enough, cheaper." Quality was whatever passed the only test anyone ran.
The wild growth (late 90s–2008). Domestic machines showed up. Everyone opened a line. Margins were fat and standards were thin. You could sell almost anything with a pretty package. I'm not nostalgic for it.
The shakeout (2008–2015). The multinationals came in properly and reset expectations. Local brands either got serious or got squeezed. This is where the real engineering started, because "cheaper" stopped being enough.
Leading (2015–now). Here's the part buyers still underestimate. Pick up a Japanese product today and put it next to a decent Chinese one. The gap people assume exists — it doesn't. On some structures we're ahead. The old engineer's line in our shop: "There's no one left to copy. Now we just invent."
We reached the point where the only move left was to create, not follow.
What actually changed
Not the marketing. The materials chain. We went from buying fiber to specifying it — PP to PET to the high-elastic stuff, then shaping it: concentric, eccentric, hollow, profiled. Domestic fiber plants now hit global-top levels. The导流 layer (the part that moves fluid sideways instead of letting it pool) is a good example — we had one developed specifically for our line that, as far as we know, doesn't exist elsewhere quite like it.
The edge isn't cheap labor. It's that we control the material from the particle up.
That vertical grip is why a buyer can come to a Chinese OEM now and ask for a structure that a retail brand in another country won't have for two years. The factory isn't waiting on a foreign supplier to invent the component.
Why this matters when you pick a supplier
A "factory" that just assembles bought-in rolls is a different animal from one that develops the material. When you're sourcing overnight period pants or a private-label line, the question isn't "how cheap." It's "who decided what's inside, and can they change it for your market?"
A plant that only buys components will tell you what's possible based on a catalog. One that develops from the fiber up will tell you what's possible based on physics. Is "made in China" still a quality risk for hygiene products?
For commodity suppliers, it can be — the low end still exists. But the leading Chinese plants now match or beat legacy global brands on structure and material control. The risk isn't the country; it's whether you're buying from a developer or a assembler. Ask what they engineer in-house.
What should I verify about a factory's R&D claim?

Does this mean Chinese OEMs are more expensive now?
Not necessarily. The cost edge from labor is mostly gone, but the integration edge — fewer middle suppliers, faster changes — offsets it. You're often paying similar money for material control you couldn't get from a catalog-assembly plant.
How do I know a plant isn't just relabeling bought-in designs?

Will a Chinese OEM protect my private-label IP?
The serious ones do — their business depends on it. Put the IP terms in the contract and confirm they run separate tooling and masking for different clients. This is standard practice at established plants, not a favor.
