China's Feminine Hygiene Industry Does Not Lack Money. It Lacks R&D.

A veteran in our industry says the same thing in every meeting: "We fight for R&D." I agree. The real shortage in China's feminine hygiene industry is not capital. It is research and development.
Look at the companies doing well today. They are the ones that connect market insight with R&D. The ones going wrong are the ones that pour money into marketing and channels while underinvesting in the product itself.
R&D is expensive and slow. Marketing is fast. Spend on traffic this month, you see sales this month. Spend on R&D, you may not see results for one or two years. With thin margins, few companies want to wait.
But that creates a vicious cycle. Underinvest in R&D → products become similar → only price can differentiate → margins shrink further → even less money for R&D. The whole industry gets dragged down.
My own history proves the point. In my early e-commerce years, I spent heavily on models and traffic. Revenue reached twenty million yuan in year one, but after platform fees, warehousing, and payroll, I lost over five million. What saved the company was not a better marketing campaign. It was a well-developed period pant — thin, breathable, secure. Once the product was right, channels and repeat orders followed.
Marketing buys traffic. Product buys repeat customers. That is the difference.
I also notice something counterintuitive. International brands are not necessarily the heaviest users of materials. Some local brands load up on every possible feature — more SAP, more pulp, more layers — and call it premium. But material volume does not equal product quality. What matters is how the materials are combined: structure, process, design. That is R&D work.
So when I talk to factory owners, I say: building a brand is not just a marketing problem. It is a product problem. And that is not a moral issue. It is a business issue.
For buyers looking for a product-driven OEM partner
If your supplier cannot explain how its R&D process works — how it tests absorbency, how it chooses materials, how it iterates after feedback — you are buying from a trader with a production line, not a real partner.
