Antibacterial vs Bacteriostatic vs Disinfection: Three Words, Three Numbers

Antibacterial has been a hot word in feminine hygiene for a couple of years now. The side effect of a hot word is that neighbouring concepts start swapping meanings. Antibacterial, bacteriostatic, disinfection — three different things, routinely printed as though they were one.
They are not, and the current Chinese standard separates them on purpose.
Three words, three different questions
Disinfection (消毒) is a different system entirely. It answers: how low was the microbial load on this finished product when it left the factory? It is a statement about the product as a whole.
Antibacterial (抗菌) answers: does this product kill specific bacteria? It is measured as a kill rate.
Bacteriostatic (抑菌) answers: does this product suppress bacterial growth? It does not require killing. It is measured as an inhibition rate.
Put side by side, the thresholds make the distinction obvious.

Two supplements to that table. The antibacterial and bacteriostatic tests are normally run against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus; if a pack also claims activity against Candida albicans, that claim has to meet the corresponding threshold as well. And regardless of claim or grade, coliforms, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and haemolytic streptococci must not be detectable. The floor does not move.
Why the three get mixed up
Because the thresholds are not equal, and a looser word is cheaper to substantiate than a stricter one.
Antibacterial demands a kill rate of 90% or better — nine out of ten. Bacteriostatic asks for 50% inhibition — half. Killing is intrinsically harder than suppressing growth. The test methods, the cost, the technical difficulty and the evidence required are all different.
So the common failure mode is a claim borrowing trust it has not earned: a product tested only for inhibition, presented in a way that reads as killing or as disinfection.
The error runs in the other direction too. Plenty of buyers assume a disinfection-grade product is automatically antibacterial. It is not. Disinfection grade says the product finished manufacturing with a very low microbial load. Antibacterial says the product itself has an ongoing killing capacity. Two different measurements, and one does not imply the other.
How to use it
You do not need the terminology. You need one sentence: decide whether you are asking about killing or suppressing.
A pack that says antibacterial should be able to show a kill rate of at least 90%. One that says bacteriostatic should be able to show inhibition of at least 50%. If what you actually care about is the hygiene level of the whole product, look for disinfection grade. Three questions, three separate numbers, three separate test reports.
For buyers running private label or wholesale programmes, this is worth writing into the specification before the first sample, not after the first shipment — because switching a claim later usually means redoing the testing.
Words on a pack are cheap. The number behind the word is the part that costs money.
