The experimental method for testing the breathability of sanitary napkins is usually very simple, with a cup of hot water at the bottom, the product in the middle, and an empty cup upside down on the top. After a period of time, observe whether there is water mist in the upper cup and the time when the water mist is generated.

The bottom film is the part nobody sees and everybody feels. A solid PE film blocks leaks but traps heat; a breathable film (microporous) blocks liquid while letting vapor out, so less of that clammy build-up. The trade is cost and a slightly different hand-feel — worth it for pants and summer pads, less critical for a quick daytime pad.

Breathability is one piece of the puzzle

A breathable backsheet helps reduce heat and humidity, but it cannot fix a weak absorbent core or a poor fit. If the pad leaks or the surface stays wet, better airflow will only help so much.
